Every CPA in Texas knows about the CPE requirement. Use those hours to make a smart career move. Consider where you want to be in the next 18 months and pick your courses with that in mind. This is one of the few things you can control, and when I see candidates with similar backgrounds, this choice often makes the difference.
Here are three DFW CPE courses I recommend for this fall, listed in calendar order:
1. Ethics for Texas CPAs (Live CPE) — September 30, 2026
Hosted by TXCPA Dallas in Addison, TX, this course is the required ethics credit for all Texas CPAs. Even if it wasn’t mandatory, I’d still recommend it. Attending in person usually leads to better discussions, and those conversations can sometimes turn into job opportunities.
2. Accounting Education Conference — October 16, 2026
Hosted by TXCPA Fort Worth, this event covers a range of topics, so it’s a good choice if you want a single day of varied CPE instead of focusing on just one subject. You’ll also meet practitioners from the Fort Worth area, which is helpful if your network is mostly in Dallas.
3. Maximizing Tax Efficiency for S Corporation Clients — October 20, 2026
Held at Greenhill Towers in Addison, TX, this is another TXCPA Dallas event. If you’re a Senior Tax Professional working with privately held, owner-operated companies—which is most of my client base—this course is highly relevant. S-corp structuring questions come up all the time with my manufacturing and industrial clients. Being able to talk about tax efficiency, not just tax compliance, is the kind of skill that can help you move up to a Controller or CFO role.
Accountants who keep learning after the CPA exam are the ones chosen for big assignments, top of mind when a Controller seat opens up, and the people I can confidently place because their skills match what clients need today. Technical skills get you started, but staying up to date is what keeps your career moving forward.
